Compared with ordinary gear transmission, the harmonic drive has the advantages of simple structure, small volume, light weight, high transmission precision, stable transmission, large range of transmission ratio and could work in high vacuum sealed space etc. It has been widely used in the field of aerospace, communications, robotics, automotive, medical equipment, general machinery etc.The flexible gear is the harmonic drive’s elastic component for power transmission. It is prone to fatigue damage and affects the character of service of the harmonic reducer. Our work is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China(Grant NO.50975295). This paper studies the transmission error and drive backlash of the harmonic reducer with composite material layer. The main research contents of this paper are as follows:① Under the rated speed and load conditions, using dynamic simulation method, We conducted a comparative study of common harmonic drive reducer and harmonic drive reducer with composite layer on transmission error. The results show that the addition of composite material layer extends the stability state of harmonic drive, while transmission error will be reduced, peak to peak remained unchanged.② Drive backlash measurements of harmonic reducer suggest that the variation trend of backlash parameter and torsional stiffness.③ Under the same working condition, we use transient dynamics to analysis the ordinary harmonic reducer, harmonic reducer partly added composite material and harmonic reducer largely added composite material. The results show that harmonic reducer with composite material layer is better than ordinary harmonic reducer in terms of backlash and torsional stiffness. Harmonic reducer with composite material layer performs better in the high-precision transmission system.
