As a practical and valuable information management system, bridge management system has played an important role in the management and maintenance of bridges. However, the way of using the existing bridge management system was outdated and the users lacked of intuitive feeling to the bridge. With the rapid advances in computer graphics and the far spreading utilization of virtual reality technology, the interaction between users and application based on a three dimensional model in virtual space has become the mainstream trend.In this paper, we used 3D bridge model based on Virtual Reality Technology to solve the problems of the way using bridge management system outdated and the users lacked of intuitive feeling to the bridge. Based on rendering the 3D bridge model, we take the 3D bridge model as the core and viewing the parts of bridge through it.Firstly, we analysis the history and current status of bridge management system, investigate the implementation and application of bridge management system, pointer out the challenge they are facing in the virtual age. Then we summary the problems of bridge management system in the virtual age, investigate the common used solutions to address related issues and then propose the solution of making the bridge 3D model as the core of the whole.Secondly, we learned the process of how to make a bridge 3D model, studied the format and resolution process of bridge model data file, optimized the format of bridge model data file and proposed the implementation strategy of dual model.Thirdly, we made a study of the three dimensional computer graphics and Open GL rendering framework, used wireframe mode and texture mode to rendering the bridge model, and also used VBO technology and the strategy of parsing model data file offline to accelerate rendering the bridge model. Meanwhile, in order to enhance the visual effect of the system, we studied image stitching technology and then synthesized bridge’s surrounding environment HD satellite map based on region-related splicing technology and loaded it into model space.At last, we proposed the 3D object surface selection algorithm based on FBO(Frame buffer object) technology, used parallel computing of GPU rather than serial computing of CPU for more efficiently. With this algorithm, we optimized the mark and selection algorithms of bridge parts and also enhanced the performance of the system.
