With the increase of traffic demand, the current urban road network often presents a highly supersaturated state of transportation. As the traffic vehicles waiting in line at intersection steady accumulation, when the queue length increased to more than the road length, it will appear the queue overflow phenomenon. The overflowed vehicles will hinder other direction vehicles’ running at intersection, and even lead to "dead lock" and traffic congestion. In order to solve the traffic congestion and improve the traffic efficiency of road network, the research on measures to prevent queue overflow of intersection is particularly important.For the serious traffic congestion caused by frequent queue overflow phenomenon, in this paper, the traffic signal control methods to prevent queue overflow of intersection are studied. Through traffic investigation and after a brief description of queue overflow phenomenon and its effects, this paper classifies the queue overflow, and analyzes the causes of the formation of the queue overflow at intersection. Then this paper considers the signal status and queuing situation of the downstream intersection, when the upstream intersection’s vehicle arrives at the downstream intersection, and uses the theory of stop-wave and starting wave propagation mechanism to set up the model of the maximum queue length at adjacent signal intersection. The reliability of the model is verified by using the actual survey to calculate the tracking error. On this basis, according to the definition of link capacity the remaining capacity prediction model is established based on the queue length, which lays the foundation for the study of the following optimization control model.Then a traffic signal control strategy based on the residual traffic capacity of the intersection exit lane is proposed. Referenced by the ideas of bus priority signal control by compressing the green light, extending the green light time and jumping phase method, the traffic signal optimal control model based on the residual traffic capacity of the intersection exit lane is set up. Then this paper carries out the simulation of the operation process and results of this optimal control model. And the simulation results show that the implementation of the optimal control model can effectively prevent the occurrence of the intersection queue overflow, and improve the traffic efficiency of the intersection.At last, this paper proposes some countermeasures of preventing queue overflow of intersection from engineering measures, technical measures and management measures.
