With the social and economic development and people’s living standards improve, the hospitals in our country are not just as mere treatment sites, but comprehensive rehabilitation center shouldering the responsibilities of reassurance and relieving patients’ anxiety. However, the excessive pursuit of environmental comfort of hospital and architectural modernity make the hospital buildings became one of the biggest energy consuming public buildings.Among which the air-conditioning energy consumption is enormous, which, according to statistics, accounted for half of the total energy consumption of the hospital. Now in the situation of global energy crisis, saving the energy consumption of air-conditioning is an important topic in hospital architectural design.Guangdong region has an East Asian monsoon climate with a long summer and short winter, the temperature and relative humidity is high during summer. Traditional architecture create a comfortable interior environment through shading, heat shielding and ventilation. At the same time they are used more and more in public buildings and are considered the important approaches to reduce energy consumption of buildings. Outpatient department allows using natural ventilation passive technology. As it is the space where patients stay the longest time, its quality of air environment plays an important role in patient’s physical and mental experience. Therefore, it is of great importance for reducing air conditioning energy consumption as well as for providing a comfortable air environment to discuss and study natural ventilation of outpatient department. This article firstly summarizes the design features of general layout and unit plan layout of outpatient department by using the methods of literature consulting and cases investigating. Secondly, by analyzing and refining the existing technique of natural ventilation, combining the design features of outpatient department layout, this article also sum up affecting factors of natural ventilation. This paper holds that the overall layout of the outpatient department, which is influenced by factors such as the layout pattern, building orientation, spatial scale and figure combination, is critical to the potential for indoor natural ventilation. Besides, the layout of outpatient department unit concerns air distribution and ventilation effect. It will be influenced by building openings, layout of ventilating roadway, profile design, and these factors are mainly derived from special layout requirements of outpatient unit such as the treatment space arrangement, waiting area layout and doctor-patient separated layout. When it comes to research methods, in order to provide a reference for future engineering design, this paper attempts to combine building technology and architectural design, analyze the influencing factors of outpatient department’s natural ventilation with the use of CFD computer simulation technique, compare the potential and effect of natural ventilation under different layout, and explore strategies of layout that are beneficial to its natural ventilation.
