In recent years, with the development of economy and the transformation of city. The land is scarce, the price of which is getting higher. At the same time, with the increasing demand for power, the reliability of power supply, and the stability requirements, which becomes the major requirements of electricity customers. The Gas Insulated Switchgear, or GIS for short, takes small area, it’s components are sealing, not easy to be interfered by the environment and many other advantages. There is a large number of 110 k V and higher voltage class GIS substation put into operation in Guangdong power grid. Meanwhile, there are some new problems such as complicated maintenance and traditional detection method is not applicable for GIS. According to the author’s working experience, with two cases in Guangdong power grid, discuss the Application of UHF GIS Partial Discharge.First, summarize the problems in operation of GIS, analysis on the main causes of GIS’s failure, illustrate the effectiveness and reliability to the Condition Based Maintenance of GIS. Introduces the characteristics of different methods of detecting partial discharge in GIS. Then review the principle of the UHF PD detection and analysis the generate reasons of GIS partial discharge.According to the two cases about the UHF detection of GIS partial discharge. We found the PD signal at the beginning, then to track them, using the ultrasonic method to confirm the position of defect, finally open the cover to check and confirm the fault. It’s a contribution to guarantee the safety and stable operation of Guangdong Power GridThe two cases show that online monitoring UHF method for gas insulated switchgear’s(GIS) partial discharge coupled with local test and oscilloscope positioning is effective and accurate. We sum up the experience from applying UHF method to GIS’s partial discharge test. Bring out test method and result according to the relevant experience. Guided by which, we give valuable suggestion in production and assembly process as well as operation of GIS to prevent potential risks caused by partial discharge. GIS must be more strictly test before they hit the market and efforts made before experiment and in the process of takeover should be intensified. We should step up our efforts to monitor the equipment when it operations and optimize its local operation, test and maintenance. All of those efforts should be carried out on the basis of its engineering practice.
