Creation Of Gray Space In Xi’an Urban Park

Xi’an, the capital city as the symbol of China’s history and culture for thousands of years brought the world’s attention. Today, along with the proposal of international metropolis of development plan, the value of the ancient city was once again affirmed.However, with the rapid development of the city as well as enhancement of the contemporary environmental awareness, people paid more and more attention to the quality of outdoor activities, raised more intense requirements of spatial flexibility and comfort, which made the function of the status quo of urban gardens lag humanities demand in urban development. The value upgrade of urban landscape was imminent.City Park as the city’s typical representative of the city garden was open to the public, providing room for their playing, rest and fitness activities. People choose different park spaces based on different activities. Varieties of park space type also carried human activities. Spatial constitution was so important that not only played a decisive role for spatial properties, but also an important factor in selecting people space.The gray space as a unique space form, enclosure but not close, uncover but not open,became an indispensable space type in the city park, providing people abundant activity rooms.This paper focused on the gray space in urban parks, analyzing and summarizing it on the basis of theoretical research home and abroad, combining with theories of environmental behavior, space design, landscape design, psychology on the composition form, attributes, roles, and relationships with people and so on. Secondly, as Xi’an Tang cultural representative and higher used frequently, the gray space in Qujiang Pool Ruins Park and Tai Chi Yun Temple Ruins Park was detailed researched and analysis, throughmaterials collection, screening venues, field trips, making drawings, etc. Finally,generalizing the usage characteristics of gray space in city parks, the paper summed up sorts of issues on application of gray space.It pointed out that the actual design should pay attention to highlight the spatial integrity, create humane workplace, geographical and cultural merge, which created rich-leveled, well-transition, with some extent of privacy and ornamental gray space.The study of gray space in Xi’an Tang cultural city parks was forward-looking and practical approaching to the design, which had some practical value and significant guide on the issue of how to better integrate ancient and modern culture, enhance the value of public space in the context of the rapid development of the city.
