More and more large aperture planar optical components are needed in the high technology fields, such as space optics, aerospace, laser fusion and so on, and their manufacturing technology has become one of the key supporting technologies in the forefront of contemporary science and technology. According to the current demand for high efficiency and high precision polishing of large aperture planar optical components, a large plane polishing machine was developed in this paper. The rapid polishing technology is developing and is one of the new polishing technologies,and its mature may provide a new highly efficient, high precision, low cost digital manufacturing technology for high-grade optics and precision mechanical parts.In this paper, based on the analysis of the optical glass polishing mechanism, the key influence factors of polishing processes and the characteristics of polyurethane polishing, the plane element polishing model is built. The clamping features of optical sheet elements are analyzed, and the clamping plan of optical sheet elements’ polishing is designed. According to multi-zone back pressure regulating principle, a method for improving the removal rate of the materials and raising the surface shape accuracy is put forward by raising the pressure in the local high surface area on the optical element.Three kinds of polishing machine layouts are studied. Through comparison of three design plans of polishing machine, a kind of vertical wall type structure and the polishing head with linear reciprocating motion are adopted. According to the design index of the polishing machine, its overall design is done, and the optimized designs of its parts are made, which ensures the mechanical precision of the developed polishing machine.The assembly process of the polishing machine is studied, and its key control points are set.The measuring methods of the machine’s accuracy are introduced, and some related process experiments were done. The experiment results showed that the developed large aperture rapid plane polishing machine has the capability of the higher material removal rate and good surfaceshapecontrol, which reached the design goal.
