Due to the small footprint, strong anti-interference capability, safe and reliable operation, and easy to maintain, the GIS has got the advantage to develop itself. However, with the increase of the power system’s voltage level, the scale of the GIS substation is also gradually increasing. Therefore, the seismic traveling wave effect is becoming more and more significant. The so-called seismic traveling wave effect refers that when the seismic wave on the surface at a certain apparent wave velocity spreads from the first part of the structure to the end of structure, time will be delayed. Because of the time delay, the seismic wave will have an impact on the seismic response of the structure. This process is called the seismic traveling wave effect. The research about GIS at home and abroad mostly ignores the seismic traveling wave effect, but for some length longer GIS, this oversight is not reasonable. So, it is an important topic that analysis the influence of the seismic traveling wave effect on the GIS’s seismic response. This paper based on the whole 550 kV GIS as the research object. Firstly, the theory and the method of modal analysis are used to analaysis the natural vibration characteristic of the GIS, and the GIS’s natural frequencies and vibration modes are got. Secondly, based on the modal analysis before, the theory and the method of the time history analysis are used to calculate the whole GIS’s displacement and stress response without considering the seismic traveling wave effect. Finally, considering the traveling wave effect of 6 kinds of seismic waves(which is Tianjin-wave and El-Centro-wave respectively corresponding to three kinds of seismic apparent wave velocity: 300m/s, 600m/s and the 1200m/s), the time history analysis method is used to calculate the whole GIS’s displacement and stress response after considering seismic traveling wave effect, which the big quality methods was adopt to input the seismic wave, and the calculated results are used to compared with results that don’t consider the seismic traveling wave effect. The results show that, for the whole GIS, after considering the seismic traveling wave effect, the position where the maximum displacement and maximum stress appeare don’t change, which the largest displacement appeares in the top of the casing, and the maximum stress appears at the bottom of the bracket of 10 support position. But the whole GIS’s maximum displacement and maximum stress value is increased, and the increased degree is bigger with the apparent wave velocity increasing. The Tianjin-wave is used as the seismic wave input, for example, when the apparent wave velocity respectively are 300m/s, 600m/s, 1200m/s, the whole GIS’s maximum displacement value respectively are 11.93 times, 11.73 times, and 6.51 times, the maximum stress value respectively are 6.44 times, 6.09 times, and 4.35 times. For each part of GIS, after considering traveling wave effect of seismic wave, the displacement and stress values increased several times than the original. The increasing degree which is the most obvious is the casing support. Under Tianjin-wave action depending on the wave velocity of 300 m/s, the maximum displacement and maximum stress value of the casing support increase most, which respectively are 28.13 times and 13.06 times. At the same time, before and after the traveling wave effect, the busbar and equipment change the postion of the maximum stress appears, and the other parts of the GIS don’t change the position of the maximum displacement and maximum stress.
