Marine main engine work on the curve of propulsion power as it is a diesel engine, and the diesel engine lies in partly power status for a long time. Shaft generator system can absorb the spare power of diesel engine, which is used for generating electricity. Shaft generator system has two types: frequency compensation and speed compensation. As a type of speed compensation, the hydrodynamic speed adjusting system can transform variable input speed into constant output speed, which can make the synchronous generator working. Comparing with traditional shaft generator system, it not only resolved the problem that carbon accumulated on the fuel jet, which damage the piston, but improved the fuel economy. With the growth of diesels’ utilization, the cost of shipping and consumption of lubricating oil will decline, hence the greenhouse gases will decrease. Furthermore, the system contributes to increase the ship’s space either, which means the ulitilization rate of cabin will enhance. Finally, the cost of maintain the electronic equipment will decrease with the reduction of diesel generator. The Voith have been successful to employ this system to 2MW wind turbine,which illustrate the value of practical application and huge potential in the power generation system.Nevertheless, the study of control system is relatively outdated, an outstanding control system will effectively improve the device’s adjusting performance, working range and quality of electricity. Based on the Commins’ s 336 k W engine, this paper design the hydrodynamic speed adjusting device, and study the control system, finally, the bench test is completed. The main contents and conclusions are as follows.(1)Based on the marine power train, the hydrodynamic speed adjusting device was designed. The structure of the device was confirmed. After getting matching calculation results, relative parameters were determined, and then dynamic model was established. Hydrodynamic speed adjusting system’s performance and hydrodynamic torque converters were researched.(2)Through developing control strategies, designing the controller, simulating and analyzing, the hydrodynamic speed adjusting control system was developed. According to the interior performance of the device, open loop-closed loop compound control strategy was designed. The simulation model was built in the basis of Simulink and Recurdyn, the strategy was simulated, after then the results were analyzed, which proved the advance of the compound control strategy. The controller was designed, which was based on the MC68HC908JB8 SCM, the toolkit of Freescale Code Warrior and MATLAB laid the foundation of the controller’s software, meanwhile, the communication protocol was developed for contacting with PC, which offered the bench test a compacted foundation.(3)The principled prototype was trial-manufactured, experiment of hydrodynamic speed adjusting control system was completed. Based on the Lab VIEW-a type of software development platform, software of measurement and control system was designed, which was used for controlling and collecting data. The test of hydrodynamic speed adjusting control system was finished on the test bench. The results shows that the system, which was based on the compound control strategy, can realize the function that transform the variable input speed into constant output speed, marine engine’s partly power was used for generating electricity, which make the fuel economy promoting, and decrease the operating cost. After comparing with the result of simulation, the accuracy of the model of electromechanical integrative simulation is proved, and the direction that improves the model was guided.
