With the rapid growth of economy, power supply facilities play an increasingly important role in domestic economy and living life. As the medium of power transmission, the power transmission line is one of the most important parts in the power supply facility, whose healthy would heavily affect the stability of power system. Most power transmission lines are deployed in wild and have to face the wretched nature environment, and thus they are easily destroyed in general. Therefore, it is critical to monitor the healthy of power transmission lines periodically.Recently, driven by the advantages of wireless sensor networks (WSN), such as low cost, low power consumption, flexibility and so on, researchers have paid a lot of attentions to the applications of WSN in various areas. As such, the power line healthy monitoring system can be designed based on WSN. By doing so, the performance of the existing power line monitoring system would be significantly improved on cost, efficiency and stability. The contribution of this work is as follows:(i) This paper designs a power line healthy monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks according to the characteristics of power transmission net. In particular, the design of such system includes four aspects. First, sensor nodes sense parameters that indicate the health condition of power lines, such as temperature, humidity and tension. Second, sensor nodes process the collected data through a data fusion algorithm to reduce the amount of transmitted data. Third, sensor nodes transmit the processed data to sink nodes and monitoring center in the system. Finally, a prototype program in monitoring center is implemented for the storage and display of the healthy data.(ii) Due to the lack of the MAC protocols suitable for the monitoring system, this paper proposes a media access control (MAC) protocol, referred to as SLDMAC, for the data transmission in the system to improve its performance. In particular, the SLDMAC protocol is proposed according to the adaptive flow and linear topology of the wireless sensor network designed for the monitoring system. In SLDMAC, node works periodically and will declaim to be sender if it has data to send in every cycle. When senders are determined in one cycle, relays are selected through the relay selection algorithm in SLDMAC. The nodes in scheduling-node set consisting of relays and senders are then stepped scheduled for sleep/wakeup as a linear data gathering chain to complete the data transmission in current network cycle. Compared with two similar protocols, our simulations show that the SLDMAC not only has better performance on reducing energy consumption and prolonging network lifetime, but also does not lead to terrible data transmission latency.
