The development of urban wetland parks, the most robust means of the protection and rational utilization of urban wetland, represents the inheritance and expansion of urban civilization. The landscape and ecological infrastructure inside urban wetland parks should epitomize the local scenic features, its history and culture and preserve its cultural uniqueness, which remains an exceptional urban asset. The planning and design of urban wetland parks along these lines constitutes the essence of urban park design of our time. In recent years, with the growth of the population and the acceleration of urbanization, energy consumption has been on the rise and environmental pollution becoming more serious, which inflicts great damage on the urban ecology. The issue of urban wetland parks has drawn growing attention from the international community. Today, the planning and development of urban wetland parks has become an important barometer for a city’s ecological status quo.The dissertation elaborates on the planning and design of urban wetland parks. First, it presents an objective review and analysis of the concept, classification and characteristics of wetland, illustrating the concept and the features of urban wetland parks and the functions of their subzones, along with the guidelines and content of and approaches to design. Second, drawing on a case study of successful wetland development and protection efforts home and abroad, the dissertation expounds on the philosophy governing the protection of wetland involved in the design of the wetland parks, the landscape functions and the importance of the design and planning approaches. A conclusion is then made about the principles and approaches which should be pursued in the planning and design of wetland landscape at home and the inherent difficulties which should be overcome. It’s noted that priority should be given to forward-looking measures concerning the protection of wetland in urban development to minimize potential setbacks, which benefits the protection of China’s wetland resources. Finally, on the basis of the theoretical research, planning practices were undertaken, with the research findings being applied to the design of the wetland park affiliated to the Third Changjiang River Bridge in the Yuhua Economic Development Zone, which highlighted the significance of putting theory into practice. The dissertation conducts a comprehensive, detailed and systematic analysis and review of the project, involving a project overview, an evaluation of resources and their status quo, the philosophy, guidelines and principles for planning, the design objectives, the planning of functional zones, roads, vertical planning, afforestation planning, construction planning, environmental planning, scenic spots planning and the economic indicators which should be taken into account. The planning and design of urban wetland parks is a novel and complicated enterprise. The dissertation presents some observations about and methods for the planning and design of urban wetland parks. The author is of the hope that the dissertation may help the public better understand and pay more attention to the effort. People are attaching growing importance to the global environment and their environmental awareness is gradually improving. Sustainable urban development and the building of eco-friendly cities have become the trend of our time. The development of wetland parks calls for enduring and arduous efforts on the part of urban planners and designers.
