Ride comfort is one of the important performances of the car, and the suspension movement characteristics influence the ride quality directly. Therefore, more and more attention has been attracted to suspension design, analysis of the movement characteristics and the study of vehicle ride comfort.In this paper, based on the vehicle’s basic parameters of a small SUV car, the front and rear suspensions performance parameters are selected and calculated. Using the data from the real vehicle measurement or technical literatures, the multi-body dynamic model of McPherson suspension is established in ADAMS/Car, run the parallel wheel travel simulation, and through the analysis find the wheel alignment parameter which changes do not conform to the requirements of design. Using the optimization module Insight, select main objective method to optimize the structure based on the suspension movement characteristics. Optimized front suspension system, other automotive subsystems and virtual test bench poster are assembled, then use vehicle combination to run automotive ride comfort simulation test. According to GB/T 4970-2009 requirements, conduct different roads, different speeds random input road simulations and triangular pulse input bump pavement simulations. After the results data post-processing, the vehicle model’s ride comfort is evaluated.The simulation results show that: the front suspension kinematics only kingpin inclination’s value and variation range do not meet the design requirements, through the optimization process they have been significantly improved, the process also makes the wheel toe angle has been optimized to a certain degree, improves the performance of the front suspension. Under the random road excitation, passengers will feel a little uncomfortable when the car drives on the large roughness roads or with high speeds; but under the pulsing road excitation, the car in each test speeds won’t be harmful to the health of the occupants.This research based on virtual prototype technology, suspension movement characteristics and the vehicle riding comfort simulation researches are achieved. In the process of car development design, the study has a certain practical significance on how to improve the suspension system and vehicle ride performance, shorten the development cycle and reduce automobile research and development costs.
