Arch dams are widely used in hydropower projects in the word of modern because of its light structure, beautiful shape, strong overcapacity, excellent behavior on resisting earthquake and so on. The arch dam is a kind of space shell structure with complicated shapes. The stress-strain property is an important index to evaluate the safety of arch dam. It is important to study the deformation and stress of arch dam under complex load and to analyze the safety of the whole structure.According to the development and present situation of arch dam, the finite element method, the basic theory and calculation method of static and dynamic analysis, based on the elastic-plastic theory in this article, the arch dam and the foundation entity model of Baihetan is built using FEPG.GID software, which has excellent 3D parametric surface modeling function. Static and dynamic analysis of concrete arch dam was studied using the 3D finite element method on ABAQUS, and then the equivalent stress calculation was studied. The main works and research conclusions of this paper are as follows:1. Regard the arch dam and foundation as a whole, considering the interaction between each other. In the static calculation, elastic plastic material is used to simulate the structure of the dam. Taking into account the gravity, water pressure,temperature stress, temperature rise and fall, uplift pressure, soil and sand pressure,analyze the deformation and stress characteristics under complex working conditions.The calculation results show that the tensile stress is bigger in the interface between dam and foundation; it’s easy to appear a stress concentration phenomenon in the dam heel and toe areas. This paper based on the method of equivalent stress, to eliminate the stress concentration phenomenon.2. The paper researched the modal analysis and dynamic time-history analysis theory. Analyze auto oscillation characteristics and the response characteristics under the earthquake. The calculation results show that whether the transverse joints is existence or not, the main tensile stress can meet the standard of tension stress control.But the main compressive stress is larger than the standard in the local area of the dam toe, which need adopt measures such as reinforcing steel bar, increasing the number of concrete to enhance the compressive strength of the dam. The engineer should pay attention to the position of the maximum opening of the transverse seam.3. All the work of this paper is combined with the practical project of high concrete arch dam and the results obtained indicate that the structure stress deformation, dynamic response result and inherent vibration characteristic are particularly good. The research of this paper can provide practical reference to the similar project.
