As the central nervous of the train’s information transmission system, train cable transmission system plays an important part in the train’ external communication like the transmission of control signal, manipulation and power supply data information. Serious consequence will be caused to the normal operation of the train by any problems occurred at any part of the cable, conductor or a poor conductor part. In order to ensure the normal operation of the train, to avoid various potential risks and improve cable detection technology and capacity, new train cable tester need to be designed and developed. For current test equipment used by this industry for train cable testing, its test accuracy is imprecise, interactive features is not friendly, and has a low degree of portability. This paper is based on the above requirements, in accordance with a cable tester overall design and planning scheme raised by a domestic train communications equipment manufacturers. Research has been carried on the new comprehensive cable tester system, which can be used to detect the failure such as cable short circuit, cable break and other problems. Cable tester system overall functional design includes hardware module design and cable test software design. The overall structure of the hardware includes ARM processor circuit, interaction module design, testing function module design, FLASH memory module design, alarm module, Ethernet and WIFI module, USB function module. The following design requirements for cable testing software need to be addressed and achieved:1. Providing an open man-machine interface to meet the test function selection, system upgrades, data updates, test results processing and other needs.2. The test results need to show that the cable type, the details of the failure short circuit, open circuit,and cable mismatch problem. Identifying cables for different destination’s classifications in the same connector. For the cable whose detection data has been stored in the archive system, the automatic testing method can be achieved.3. The test results and data and cables matching files need to be stored for further processing. The test results can be classified by test time, test failures and other conditions.
