Ocean occupy 71% of the world’s area. Minor changes of the ocean can bring a great impact on human society and the global climate. Therefore, the observation of all aspects of sea water has been a hot topic of research. The detection of sea ice is a key point in the field of ocean exploration because that the change of sea ice has been considered as one of the main factor in the change of the ocean environment. Due to the complexity of sea ice structure, the measurement of detection of the sea ice thickness, compares to the other field of ocean exploration, developments slowly. The ice thickness detection system is urgently needed by the countries around the world.Under such background, A microwave radar system for measuring sea ice thickness based on the theory of linear frequency modulated continuous wave ranging is designed because that the FMCW radar system owe the advantages of low cost, low power consumption, low weight and small size. This paper is mainly responsible for system software algorithms. Finally, the ice-thickness-inversion algorithm based on FMCW range detecting principle is completed. At the same time, the algorithm combining FMCW algorithm and SAR algorithm is proposed to use in the detecting of sea ice. This algorithm can image the ice section.According to the actual situation,this paper summarizes the problems and gives the corresponding solutions. In order to obtain the effective signal data and regularize the format for storing data, this paper studies and designs the pre process of the FMCW radar system. Besides, Fence Effect of the FFT algorithm and the noise can deteriorate performance of FMCW Radar System. Their influence is studied and the corresponding solutions are proposed. Signal-nonlinear problem is also considered and corrected. Meanwhile, a simulation system of FMCW radar system considering the impact of the physical characteristics of the ice is designed and completed.On the basis of FMCW radar system, the idea of SAR is introduced into the application of ice detection. This paper presents the detailed derivation procedure of this algorithm. The corresponding simulation program is designed to prove the accuracy and effectiveness of the FMCW-SAR algorithm when it is used in ice detecting. In the simulation system, the influence of several main physical characteristics of ice layer on electromagnetic wave is considered. Two point and multi point simulation are carried out respectively. The final simulation results prove that the FMCW-SAR radar system based on RD algorithm is effective and accurate.
