In many urban public transport systems, the low floor vehicle using resilient wheel, with the advantages of its fast, convenience, low noise, develop more and more quickly. Different from rigid wheels, resilient wheel cannot be made into instrumented wheelset.It has important engineering significance to apply wheel/rail force indirect measurement method on the resilient wheel light rail vehicle for assessing the low floor vehicle’s safety.Accurately measureing the wheel/rail force is the base of vehicle derailment safety index. At the same time, it is also a further study on vehicle performance and the theoretical basis to solve the problem of wheel/rail surface damage, etc. In order to evaluate the elastic wheel low floor vehicle’s safety assessment, an accurate measurement method to measure the wheel/rail force is particularly important.Compared the wheel/rail force measurement methods at home and abroad, this paper studies the feasibility that the indirect measuring method is applied to the low floor light rail vehicleswith resilient wheel. First of all, using the SIMPACK software to set up the nonlinear dynamic simulation model of the low floor light rail vehicles with resilient wheels and rigid wheels, andthe dynamic performance of the two vehicle models are compared. Then, to verify the indirect measuring method can be used for the low floor light rail vehicles with resilient wheel, here the wheel-rail force results using indirect measuring method and using the simulation valuemethod are compared. Through the dynamic simulation analysis, for the low floor vehicles with resilient wheels using the wheel rail force indirect measurement method, although the calculation results using the indirect measurement method and the simulation output value has certain error, error is not big, within the scope permitted in engineering. So the wheel rail force indirect measurement method is worthy of application and promotion in the practical engineering.Finally, according to the indirect measurement method of the rigid wheel, the wheel force balance equation can be built. Then by measuring the acceleration of axlebox and the relativedisplacement of the primary suspension, the wheel rail force can be calculated. In this paper, the safety of the low floor light rail vehicles with resilient wheel using the indirect measurement method is evaluated.
