On the railway transportation system mainly consists of rails and vehicles, and the rail suffers the entire vehicles’weight, it will appear a variety of injuries. The rail maintenance has a great significance to extend its service life and improve the quality of the railway operation and safety. As one of the important means of rail maintenance, rail grinding not only achieve the goal of restoring the original rail profile, but also can change the rail profile, which can improve the wheel/rail interaction and prevent the occurrence of rail failures. In the actual rail grinding operation, due to the working state of the grinding train and the complexity of the trackway, and many other factors, some errors between the actual of profile and the target profile will occur. It will inevitably cause the wheel/rail interaction change.The tolerance ability of these errors is defined as the rail grinding profile of wheel/rail interaction tolerance performance. Therefore, the study of the rail grinding profile of wheel/rail interaction tolerance performance for actual rail grinding operation has a great theoretical value and practical significance. And to provide theoretical basis for the rail grinding quality inspection standards.In this paper, the main work and conclusions are as follows.(1) First of all, a litrature review on rail grinding is presented, the research significance and the direction are put forward.(2) It is found that there are three widly used high-speed railway rail grinding profiles in the domestic survey, which are CN60,60N and BST. And then the geometric among the three rail grinding profiles is compared. By wheel/rail contact geometry and contact mechanics, the static wheel/rail contact characteristics of the rail grinding profile are analyzed. And vehicle system dynamics model is established to analyze the dynamic performance of the rail grinding profile. The performance of the rail grinding profile is evaluated by the perspective of the above two. The results show that:The grinding amount of 39.6 mm2 is required when changing the CN60 to 60N profile, and aiming at BST profile only need 11.4 mm2. The static contact characteristics and dynamic performance of thes three high-speed rail grinding profiles are similar when matched with the new LMa. But when they match with the abrasion rail, the performance of the BST and 60N are superior to CN60.(3) A field research of the rail grinding on one of high-speed railway is conducted. The rail grinding process error could cause the profile rotation, translation and changes. The influence on the rail grinding profile’s tolerance performance has been anslysed. The tolerance performance of rail grinding profile has been studied. The results show that:the rail grinding profile on profile rotation and translation has good tolerance performance.But the rail grinding process error will cause the grinding profile geometry shape irregular change, which has certain influence on the wheel/rail contact static characteristics, but little effect on the dynamic performance of the profile.
