The problem of water shortage and pollution is deepening year by year, it has seriously affected the water security of residents now, due to the relative lagging of water pollution control there are even water quality-induced water shortage. Our country has been constantly revised and strengthened drinking water health standards, so as to narrow the gap between Chinese water quality standards and international standards, to better safeguard people’s health. Turbidity has been a regular observation projects in the field of water environ-ment and water resources. For drinking water, high turbidity means the content of various particles or microorganisms in water is high, it is harmful to drinkers’ health. So governments have developed a series of turbidity and suspended solids standards for drinking water and wastewater emissions. As a multifunctional water conservancy projects, reservoir is usually water source or alternate source of surrounding and downstream residents living water and industrial and agricultural water. Studying the movement of suspended solids and water turbidity in reservoir, has important implications for strengthe-ning of water quality management, and protection of residential water safety. The development of society and the increase of the city size lead to the imbalance between supply and demand of city, also the issue of deficient water. Therefore, Surface Water has to be constructed before the reservoir were finished or has been filled with water, which means the turbidity in the exit of reservoir could not be measured, now, the turbidity in the exit need to be measured. While, the sediment concentration of north river system is quite big, precipitation uneven distribution in a year, huge changes of sediment in the reservoir, the variation of turbidity has outstanding features when it as the source of water, following the alteration of season and climate, it can bring about the abrupt change within short times. The range of this variation even overstep what the water plant can sustain, it has the direct influence to the operation of downstream water treatment facilities and the quality of water supply. Therefore, it is necessary to predict and analysis the turbidity of water source in the reservoir, guarantee the quality through supervise the variation of it and adjust the operation timely. The main research results and technical methods of this paper could be applied to other similar projects, for research or production work, to promote scientific and technological progress in this area. It has important implications for strengthe-ning of water quality management, environmental protection, increase of water utilization efficiency. Calculation results of this paper also can provide important scientific basis for downstream decision-making section who built water purification structures. Therefore, this research has important theoretical and practical values. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1) The spatial distribution characteristics of suspended sediment in differ-ent locations of reservoir were obtained from suspended sediment subsidence model and transport model in reservoir, which established in accordance with the movement of sediment, it was analyzed from production and transportation mechanism of sediment in reservoir. The overall trend is suspended sediment concentration decreases along the flow direction, and gradually increases along the vertical direction from top to bottom.(2) The relationship between reservoir suspended sediment concentration and water turbidity was established based on turbidity calibration tests. The experiments were carried out with self-formulated suspended sediment samples, which formulated according to suspended sediment particle size gradation in reservoir. The formula is:YNTU=0.3444Xppm-3.291.(3) The turbidity predictions of different location of reservoir and channel inlet in wet, normal and low flow year was obtained from the built sediment subsidence model, transport model and the relationship between suspended sediment concentration and water turbidity in reservoir.
