The mud-tailings reservoirs are special kind of industrial buildings. The specific technique of discharge-accumulation and storage environment of mud-tailings reservoirs and other factors, resulting in a high rate of mud water inside the mud-tailings reservoirs and the mud-tailings reservoirs are difficult to drainage consolidation in the natural accumulation conditions with very complex and special physical and mechanical properties. However, there is little research about the special project.In this paper, the research object is based on the 1# and 2# mud-tailings reservoir of China aluminum co. LTD., Guangxi. Using site testing, geotechnical testing indoor and X-ray Energy Dispersive Analysis (EDAX)to study the physical and mechanical properties of the mud inside tailing reservoirs and through analysis and comparison between 1# and 2# mud-tailings reservoir, also between each depressions, the law of the distribution about mud engineering characteristic was obtained. The result showed that:(1) the mechanical properties of the mud have obvious regional characteristics, which can be divided into the dry beach, within the range of 10m from the edge and far away from the drawing hole or the edge.(2) the physical properties of mud have obvious law and they are interactional. Affected by the way the mud discharged, coarse particles sank first and concentrated near the drawing hole. The moisture content of mud has obvious regional characteristics that the average moisture content of the mud near the drawing hole is just 41.49% while in the middle of the tailing is 137.02%. The plastic index of mud reservoir is affected by grain composition and mineral composition. As the fine particle content is rich and the surface area is high, the plastic index is high. The permeability coefficient can be divided into two sections,10-2~10-3 cm/s and 10-5~10-6 cm/s. Section 10-5~10-6cm/s mainly near the edge of mud-tailings reservoir, as the particles are relatively small; section 10-2~10-3cm/s mainly far away from the edge of mud-tailings reservoir, as the particles are relatively large.Based on the research about physical and mechanical properties of the mud and with the use of grey related degree analysis, the most significant quantitative factors of engineering characteristics were calculated. By using matlab7.0 software, combining quantitative factors and quantity factor, a model based on quantification theory for stability assessment was established. To finish the partition and evaluation of the engineering characteristics, the evaluation model calculated the soil samples and the mud-tailings reservoir was divided into 3 engineering geological areas. According to the position of each sampling point and the analysis of the distribution of the physical and mechanical properties of the mud, combining with the elevation map of the mud reservoir, the zoning map of 1# and 2# mud-tailings reservoir was drawn.
