With the increase of speed and transportation density of railway, the rail grinding has been used more frequently. It is essential to study how to improve the grinding efficiency of rail grinding train in the finite comprehensive maintenance gap time. The grinding pattern of rail grinding train is combination of a series of grinding parameters including grinding stone angle, grinding pressure and the speed of rail grinding train. At present, the setting of rail grinding pattern mainly depends on the artificial experience in the field application. Therefore, the study about the scientific method to optimal design the rail grinding pattern, has an important theoretical and technical guidance for improving the quality and efficiency of rail grinding.Considering the difference between the grinding capacities of grinding stones against different 60 kg/m rail head arc, a linear relationship between the grinding amount and grinding power on different rail head arc is established. Cubic spline curve fitting is used to accurately demonstrate the profile of rail head. Based on the actual situation of GMC96 rail grinding train, the influence of different rail head arc on the grinding accuracy and the difference of grinding area of each rail head segment are taken into account to arrange grinding stone angle and the final angles of grinding stones are optimized using a MATLAB program. The grinding power of grinding stone is obtained via a series of programs based on the difference of grinding depth of every grinding stone. Furthermore, the grinding amount of every grinding pass is optimized and the final rail grinding patterns and rail profile after grinding are obtained. Compared with the rail head profile before grinding and grinding target profile, a method of evaluating grinding quality is proposed. Finally, a software of rail grinding pattern is developed by means of the graphical user interface (GUI) of MATLAB software.The main conclusions are drawn as follows.(1) On the basis of different grinding capacity of grinding stone against different rail 60kg/m rail head arc and field testing data, there is a linear relationship between the grinding amount of single grinding stone and grinding power. A parametric equations of the rail profile before grinding and target grinding profile are obtained by means of a three spline interpolation function.(2) The final grinding angle of grinding stone is designed using a method of programming optimization for rail pre-grinding. On the basis of the grinding depth consistency, a designing method of stone grinding power is proposed and the pre-grinding pattern of 60 kg/m rail is designed. In multiple rail grinding passes process, as the grinding amount of every pass in previous grinding passes increases or the grinding amount of last grinding pass decreases, the final grinding error obviously declines. With the decrease of total grinding amount, the final grinding error reduces under the same condition. The grinding pattern of maintenance grinding is designed based on the optimal grinding amount of every pass.(3) By means of the graphical user interface (GUI) of MATLAB software, the subroutines of rail grinding pattern are integrated into a whole, and the software of rail grinding pattern is developed.
