Lightning disasters pose a great threat to high-voltage transmission lines. The traditional method of using lightning damage risk assessment software to predict and assess lightning hazard on the power grid is single. This can’t deal with lightning damage on the power grid effectively. In order to monitor the occurrence of lightning more comprehensive, this paper tries to introduce the GIS technology to the high voltage grid lightning hazard analysis and develop Sichuan power grid lightning thematic mapping system. We can use its effective data storage management, map visualization, and spatial analysis functions to storage and manage power lightning damage thematic data more effectively, express the space position relationship between power grid and lightning more directly, and analyze the specific impact of lightning on the high voltage transmission lines. The main research work is as follows:(1) Data compilation and data collection. This section includes the power industry cartographic specifications, the necessary data to produce power lightning hazard map, and relevant literature to refer to process these data.(2) The overall system architecture design. We used C/S pattern to design system architecture. The architecture is mainly composed of five parts, namely, data layer, data access layer, logic layer, core function layer, and user interaction. Data layer contains basic geographic data and power lightning damage thematic data; Data access layer contains the spatial data access interface and attribute data access interface; Logic layer contains spatial analysis model and database operations; Core function layer contains data management, spatial analysis, mapping and map output, and other functions; User interaction layer contains the system’s UI module, users can realize simple multiple interfaces by using this.(3) System function development. Develop a Sichuan power grid lightning thematic mapping system based on ArcSDE, SQL Server, C# language, ArcEngine component. The study content is divided into three aspects:① Data storage and management. Set up a database based on SQL Server to storage geographic data, power thematic data, and manage these data; ② Specific function development. Develop system’s function based on C# language, ArcSDE, and ArcEngine component for data input, data processing, cartographic expression, map grooming, map output, spatial analysis, and other functions. ③ Mapping and lightning damage analysis. Make the power grid lightning thematic maps according to the successful development of the system, and combine lightning with power grid transmission lines to analyze lightning hazards on the power grid.
