| Shanty towns transformation is an important part of urban renewal and it is also a major people’s livelihood project in our country. There are many dilapidated houses in Shantytowns that potential security risks exist. The poor infrastructure and structure of function are seriously inconsistent with times and urban space, which more complicated and deeper social issues exist. Lots of problems are exposed during the renovation of shanty towns. The beautification of urban image is at the cost of neglecting the interests of residents. The goal of urban restoration to improve the residential buildings is overlooked, and underestimation of urban memory as well as the gentrification in area led to the unsatisfied results for the renovation of shanty towns. Under this circumstances, the essay is focus on the research of renovation of shanty towns from the prospective of urban design, and propose some targeted design strategy.First, the essay organized theories related to the urban renovation and its practice, studied the relevant concepts and connotation, analyzed the features such as composition of shanty towns, physical environment, space form and social connection. The essay did the research based on the impact led by the public restructure of shanty towns.Second, based on the organic renewal theory, the author did the field survey, conducted deeper analysis according to the representative case of Chengdu and assessed the results. Besides, the author also did the further study based on the theories related to the urban design and concluded the restructure composition of public space of shanty towns.Last, the author proposed the basic principles on the basis of research and presented the design strategy in terms of spatial order, space form, space function and the spirit of place.The urban renovation in shanty towns cannot only improve the living standard, but also reshape the urban space, cultural environment.
