Lead oxide ceramics is the significant component of solid phase oxygen control system in LBE, it adjusts the dissolved oxygen to a certain amount by dissolution and precipitation in liquid lead-bismuth Eutectic. So that oxide layer of proper thickness on the structure materials surface can inhibit further corrosion. Consequently, the core material lead oxide ceramics must be well studied.In this paper, we carried out preparation and characterization of lead oxide ceramics include raw material formulation, green body fabrication, sintering process and performance analysis.We Systematically test the constituent of PbO, Pb3O4 and Pb. Pb powder can tougher the ceramics by liquid phase sinering, and intensify the heating process of microwave sintering. Finally we found several composition of prescription which have superior properties after a large number of experiments.As no chemical reagent was allowed in lead oxide ceramics preparation,the green body of ceramics was difficult to moulding. Powder re-press treatment was used to acquire proper size distribution, and appropriate press craft was adopted to avoid crack on green body.The heating parameters of sintering were summarized by lots of experiments, including Pb metal liquid phase sintering and lead oxide cermaics microwave sintering.At last, the microstructure and mechanical properties are compared and analized, providing theoretical basis for further study of lead oxide ceramics.The results showed that the lead oxide ceramics with constituent of PbO, Pb3O4 and Pb were superior than single conponent lead oxide ceramics. The fracture toughnesss and hardness of cermaics are remarkablly enhanced by adding Pb powder. The lead oxide ceramics by microwave sintering shows better performance than that by conventional sintering of the same conponent. Microwave processing can lower the sintering temperature,shorten the heating time, and reduce the volatilization of lead oxide.
