Power Line Communication (PLC) is a unique communication of power system. It uses the power line of power system as a communication medium. This communication method can save the cost of laying a communication line. It is a very promising mode of communication. This technology will be widely used in the future. PLC must be flexible enough. Thus PLC must be flexibility to choose the protocol parameters and functions according to the channel state, business needs and network load conditions. At different channel conditions, PLC technology provides the best communication services for the different services.Firstly, this paper analyzes the parameters and functions of physical layer and MAC layer of the broadband PLC protocol (IEEE 1901, Homeplug AV) and narrowband PLC protocol (PRIME, G3 and IEEE1901.2), such as modulation and coding scheme, channel access and priority mechanism. Secondly, in order to meet the needs of the intelligent electricity distribution and application, this paper study the adaptive mechanism of the PLC protocol based on PLC channel, service type and network load. In different channel conditions, service type and network load conditions, PLC protocol achieve optimal network performance by changing the adaptive parameters and functions of physical layer and MAC layer. Finally, this paper studies the two channel access methods of PLC protocol:Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). When the network load is light, the real-time of CSMA/CA is superior to TDMA. Otherwise TDMA is superior to CSMA/CA. Meanwhile, this paper improves CSMA/CA. This paper proposes the new CSMA/CA based on Fibonacci algorithm. Compared with the original CSMA/CA, the improved CSMA/CA can more quickly adapt to the change of network load.
