| Peter Walker is a well-recognized representative of contemporary American minimalist landscape designers. The vast majority of theoretical research today on landscape design interprets his work through the lens of minimalism. However, due to the complexity of the nature of landscape design itself, minimalism often shares similar views and philosophies with post-modernism. This paper examines the sophistication and multiplicity behind Peter Walker’s designs using his work as a subject of literature research, case study and comparative analysis, and postulate the opinion that his work incorporates many post-modern elements and influences.Many of Peter Walker’s designs incorporated historical references, includes:1-. symbolic feature of landscape design; 2〠exploring the historical context of the site; 3〠non traditional classical tendency; 4〠expression of metaphor and symbol; 5〠the use of decorative art; 6〠popular design tendency; 7〠ecological binding function, bringing his design philosophy and technique to the realm of post-modernism.Peter Walker’s work are diverse and multi-faceted. Interpreting his work from the perspective of post-modernism helps better understand the beauty of his designs, provides landscape architects a unique source of value and inspiration, and hopefully enriches the academic research on China’s urban garden construction. |
