With the continuous development of China’s social economy and the improvement of people’s living standard, the demand for high quality electric power energy becomes more and more strong. In recent years, the electric power industry develops in a fast speed, where distribution network is the key link to face the users directly. The optimization of reactive power in distribution is very necessary for supplying users and the safe operation of electric system.In this paper, the significance of reactive power compensation for distribution is discussed by analyzing the mechanism of it; after which the 110kV high-voltage distribution network in Ninghai County is researched and it is simplified in order to calculate the power flow in the process of optimization. And then the principle of various reactive power compensation devices is introduced as well as the main method for compensating reactive power. Finally, the optimal reactive power compensation model of the substation is established where the goal is to reduce the loss of 110kV distribution network and the constraint is keeping the voltage of the network this area in a reasonable level. During this process, a comparison between genetic algorithm and particle swarm algorithm is made to find out the latter is more efficient, which is chosen in optimizing the reactive power compensation of the network in Ninghai County and the compensation capacity of static Var generator (SVG) is obtained.
