The large-scale development and utilization of Renewable energy, such as wind power and solar power is promoted due to energy shortage, environment pollution, caused by exploitation of fossil fuels. Peak shaving has become one of the most prominent issues in the world. Efficient large-scale energy storage technology can effectively balance the penetration of intermittent and dispersed sources of power into electric grids. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a large-scale energy storage technology except pumped storage. Wind power and solar power is stored as potential energy of air and then converted to electricity for electric grids in the CAES system. So CAES not only improves the utilization of renewable energy, but also plays a role of peak shaving. Adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) is a novel CAES system, based on the traditional CAES. The main content of this paper include:(1) The operation process of ACAES was simulated and analyzed to verify the feasibility of the system. Compression heat is recovered and stored for heating the inlet air of turbine in the ACAES system. So the efficiency of the system is improved. ACAES is considered as the basic research case. Molten salt Hitec is selected as the heat storage medium. The operation process of ACAES was simulated by Aspen Plus. The overall efficiency of thermal energy storage efficiency is only 55.55%, within a reasonable range. ACAES in the text is a reasonable and practicable system.(2) An adiabatic compressed air energy storage-solar system (ACAES-S) is put forward and simulated, analyzed and optimized in this text. The compression heat is the low heat source and the solar energy is the hot heat source in ACAES-S system. Compared with ACAES system, the overall efficiency of ACAES-S is 62.16%, lower than that of ACAES and the thermal energy storage efficiency is 8.48%lower than that of ACAES. However the electricity storage efficiency is about 2% higher than that of ACAES. Exergy efficiency of ACAES-S is 66.54%,1.6% lower than the exergy efficiency of ACAES. In addition, the improvement measure of the ACAES-S system was also proposed:thermal energy storage system is added in the solar system, so output power is kept stable when the solar energy is insufficient; tower solar power is selected in the solar subsystem as the collecting temperature is higher.
