With the development of society and economy, electric power system is becoming more and more complicated, both the increasing number of interconnected areas and the introduction of wind power put electric power system in a situation, in which it is exposed to more sudden and larger load disturbance. This paper proposes a FA- based fuzzy PI controller for automatic generation control of four interconnected area power system with and without wind power. The proposed method combines fuzzy control and firefly algorithm, and realizes self-adjustment of controllers by tuning the fuzzy control rules and parameters of fuzzy PI controllers with firefly algorithm. Firstly, this paper constructs overall mode for a four areas interconnected AGC system with and without wind power, which takes two nonlinearities containing the valve position limit and generator rate constraint into consideration. Secondly, it discusses the basic theory and superiority of firefly algorithm, and compares it with PSO. Then fuzzy control is combined with and firefly algorithm, and fuzzy rules, qualification factors, scale factor and PI parameters are optimized by firefly algorithm. At last, the proposed controller is used in four areas interconnected AGC systems with and without wind power, and compares it with fuzzy PI control in the situation of Matlab/Simulink. Investigations reveal that the performance of FA based fuzzy PI controller is better than fuzzy PI controller for a nonlinear interconnected four area thermal system.
