Data from the exploration agencies in the world show that the oil and gas resources in the Arctic regions are very rich. This fact has attracted the attention of the neighboring countries, while the development of the Arctic has been carried out in full swing. In the process of human beings into the Arctic, an indispensable tool-ship will be more frequent in the Arctic seas. On the side, due to mounts of ice melts in the arctic resulting from climate change, navigation in the Arctic seas comes true. And then more and more commercial vessels will navigate in the arctic waterway. Engineering service ship and merchant ship navigating in high latitude sea area will be subject to ice load. Even in the summer, a large number of floating ice falling off glaciers endanger ships. And once ships collide with iceberg, great loss of life and property will occurs. In the harsh environment, it’s necessary to strengthen ship structure. Work was done for side plate and frame to strengthen the side structure, and the ship responses under the ice impact were discussed in this paper.Various factors affecting mechanical properties of ice was described. On base of ice mechanical property, ice was simulated with strain rate elastic-plastic model. Numerical experiment that ice collided with rigid wall was carried out, and the numerical results showed that the P-A curve was close to test results and the ISO curve. The corrugated-core sandwich plate was put forward. The performance of steel plate, sandwich plate and corrugated-core sandwich plate were compared, and the corrugated-core sandwich plate proved to be the better one. That how parameters such as core height, thickness of panel plate and core plate influence the performance was discussed. Result showed that the corrugated-core sandwich plate performed differently as the parameter changing. Meanwhile, the appropriate range of parameters were given on base of the change law of performances. Two programs were taken to strengthen the side structure of a product oil tanker by corrugated-core sandwich plate. First, the corrugated-core sandwich plate was applied to side plate. Second, the original platform was replaced with corrugated-core sandwich plate. According to different ice shape and impact locations, Collision between side structure and ice under 11 conditions were simulated through ANSYS/LS-DYNA. And then the damage deformation, force and energy were analyzed. Meanwhile, responses of old structure and new structure under same condition were compared. The feasibility of two programs was analyzed.
