Urban Street Space Investigation And Promotion Strategy Study Based On PSPL Survey

Street space is an important component of urban public space and closely related to people’s daily lives, it is a basic way to provide people with a place for outdoor activities; with the excessive development of urbanization and motorized transport, street space is facing more and more problems with gradually lack of attention to the users. Transformation and promotion of street space should never be one-sided pursuit of unconventional, economic interests and the commercial value of the individual and neglect the user’s public life, humanity and the unique local traditional style. So far, China’s research methodology of street space is lack of a scientific and complete method for assessing the quality of the space for city streets and public citizens living conditions.Based on this background, taking “people” as the starting point to discuss more systematic and targeted research methodology on current stage, has great significance on promoting and developing the street space. PSPL research methods described herein is based on the Danish scholar Jan Gehl’s research methodology of public space- public life, the method has been widely used in urban renewal projects around the world. This article focuses on the perspective of physical environment requirements from people and their social activities to study and evaluate the quality of urban street space.This paper will firstly go through the study of urban street space and conduct deconstructing analysis for street space in different perspectives to provide theoretical proof and analytical foundation for the upcoming research on application of PSPL to street space. However, our street space development status unlike Western countries, we are lack of a more systematic study of the research methodology of street space. Therefore, to conduct new street space assessment methodology with the application of PSPL is the key point of this paper. This paper will summarize the research objectives and significances of PSPL research methodology by general briefing afterwards, through practical case study to analyse the practical value to enhance the street space by PSPL survey, and explore the most suitable method and development path for our own urban street space. In the end, based on the localized PSPL research methodology, take West Street of Xi’an as the street space research object, through effectively understanding the attributes of people’s activities and behaviour in the street space to fill in the foundation data of urban public street space behaviour. To analyse the combination of qualitative outcome and quantitative outcome, provide the basis for upgrading and transformation of street space, combined with the feedback of field research data to provide enhancement strategies.
