Road traffic safety issue has been the focus of social concern, and many reseachers are paying attention to the advanced safety technologies for improving the situation. The safety assistance system based on cooperative vehicle infrastructure technology is an important research content in intelligent transportation system, so that drivers can get other vehicle driving and traffic information in a range of beyond driver’s vision, which provides theoretical and technical support for vehicle driving safety. This paper set the rear end collision warning system based on cooperative vehicle infrastructure technology as research object. The study covers with safety distance model、method of wireless communication、system platform for the development of research. Finally the rear end collision warning system based cooperative vehicle infrastructure technology is designed and implemented to test.On the basis of the research status of the cooperative vehicle infrastructure system and the safety distance model, this paper makes a deep research on the safety distance model based on the cooperative vehicle infrastructure technology. Firstly, analysis of the characteristics of information propagation in vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure, the cause of delay in the cooperative vehicle infrastructure is studied, and the information propagation delay model of the rear end collision warning system is established. Secondly, aiming at safe distance to have error influenced by road conditions, GPS errors and the information propagation delay. This paper proposes a multi-source mixing error compensation of safety distance model, based on traditional kinematic model. The rear end collision warning system architecture were studied and the system was built based on DSRC communication technology. Communication software was developed under the Linux environment and application of rear end collision warning system was developed under Android environment. In the real scenes, the performance of cooperative vehicle infrastructure safety distance model is tested by this system.Test results show that safety distance model based on cooperative vehicle infrastructure technology has a good performance when lead vehicle is stationary、uniform deceleration and maximum deceleration,the average distance error is 0.97 meters. The average false alarm rate of the rear end collision warning system is 3%, meeting the requirements of actual safety performance.
