Currently most of the interface designs of the domestic Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDs) are directly copied from that of the Head-Up Display (HUD). Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) is a new type of cockpit that shows displays in the combat aircraft. This allows pilots to get information directly from the field of view and to keep their heads up when driving without overlooking the dashboard. Tasks for future pilots will be more diverse, and the amount and complexity of information on the display system interface in the fighter will be higher. This requires that pilots have quick recognition and response capabilities. So, the HMDs interface design is quite important for smooth and efficient completion of pilot flight operations.Firstly, research was carried out on the four typical flight phases of military aircraft (take off, cruise, flight and landing) and the main mission of each phase. Based on the characteristics of the flight missions and each flight phase, the missions of each phase are summarized. Taking the different importance levels of different missions into account, the interface design for flight information elements has been simplified and cohesively arranged. Then, some parts of the existing F-35 HMD interface have been improved to enhance the efficiency of cognition and the quality of implementation. After that, an eye tracking experiment has been conducted for the design points, along with an intensive study on the influence of the pilot task execution efficiency and accuracy comparing the old and new interface design by some eye movement index, such as reaction time and fixation count. With regards to the study of the layout of HMDs interface information, an in-depth study of a typical situation was conducted about in-flight alarm information display area is done. Moreover, a behavioral experiment in accordance with the tasks for pilots in the four typical flight phases is implemented to get different priority positions of the alarm information displays in different flight conditions.
