The role of demand response as a dynamic resource in the electricity market has been paid more and more attention, and the demand response projects have brought many benefits to the grid, customers and society and some other stakeholders. But there are still a series of problems in the practice of demand response, such as the lack of the basic scientific theory, fetishistic mode of operation of demand response, the incomplete evaluation index system, the lack of comprehensive evaluation methods, project designed ignoring the market environment and planning target deviation the actual situation. Therefore, it’s necessary to carry out the study on the basic theory and establish a set of assessment techniques adapting to different power market environment to help the designers to make a decision of the demand response planning work. In response to these problems, this thesis carried out the study on the assessment of the performance and benefits of demand response to meet the needs of different market environments, and the main contents are shown as follows:Firstly, combined with the status of implementation of demand response domestic and abroad, this thesis discussed the operating mechanism and property of demand response under different market environment in depth and summarized the demand response organization system, prices and trading mechanisms under the unilateral and bilateral open market environment. The key elements of the program were refined by analysis the typical demand response program domestic and abroad and a qualitative analysis of the relationships between the main elements and the participation level of the demand response were discussed.Secondly, in order to accurately grasp the changes of the customers’ load after the demand response, this thesis established an improved model of customer response characteristics based on the price elasticity matrix. According to the different respond periods, customers were divided into four different types, and the participation level of the customers was introduced into the model. Then a numerical example is carried out to simulation of customer response characteristics in different demand response programs and analysis the effect of different types of customer on the performance of the demand response. The application results proved the effectiveness of the model. To deal with the problem of the assessment of demand response programs, this thesis established assessment methods of the demand response to meet the needs of different market environments and constructed the demand response performance metrics covering both the performance and economic indicators to provide the standards for the evaluation, and analyzed the similarities and differences of planning assessment in different market environments. An evaluation technique based on entropy method and gray comprehensive evaluation was established to determine the best targeted demand response program, which solves the non-uniform dimension and multi-objectives optimization problems and provides technical support to the decision-making and development of demand response. Then, two typical demand response cases under unilateral and bilateral market environments were provided respectively to show the assessment process of demand response under different scenarios, and the results were explained from the perspectives of both the program rules and evaluation objectives in depth. Thus the effectiveness and applicability of this model were proven through the numerical example. Finally, it summarized the main contents of this thesis, clarified the significance and value of the contents of this thesis and pointed out the shortcomings to be improved in this research to provide a reference for further work in the field.
