In order to improve the frequent high stress condition and prolong the life of tower crane, the numbers of movable balance weight tower crane arises at the historic moment. But it does not significantly improve stress distribution level of tower crane. On the contrary, it has brought a lot of defects which results of limited application. Aiming at solving the unreasonable stress distribution disadvantage of the present domestic movable balance weight characteristics of tower crane, this paper proposes a novel resolution to improve the tower crane structure.In order to design the movable balance weight tower crane, this paper chooses the scissor hinge unit combination into tower crane structure. And this design introduces the developable structure, namely, putting shear type hinge unit into tower crane structure. Because of the features of developable structure space scale, it can significantly increase the scale of the balance weight of movable distance and reduce the bending moment at the top of the tower crane base balance, which is one of prominent advantage of traditional movable balance weight of tower crane that doesn’t have. The design goal is to meet the tower crane stability and static stiffness requirements. At the same time the dynamic characteristics of design is to be better and lateral displacement is also dropped sharply, compared with fixed balance weight of tower. The tower stability is more reliable, and it can make full use of the derrick and tower’s material structure, greatly reducing the weight of tower crane and power consumption.Firstly, this paper researches on the tower crane principle of structure design and analysis. Based on dynamic statics analysis method, this paper obtains the design organization and mechanical properties of each part of the tower crane, and analyzes the variable amplitude force of tower crane, lateral displacement, and the tower’s stability characteristics.Then, kinematics analysis and structure optimization design of tower crane is discussed. With the optimization target of dynamic displacement response amplitudes, this design optimizes the structure component size parameters and ensures that the tower crane is under the condition of optimal static stiffness calculation solution.Nextly, the structure design and finite element analysis for tower crane is presented. According to the tower crane design specifications, this paper determines the technical specifications, designs the structure of tower crane, including hoisting mechanism, luffing mechanism, slewing mechanism, lifting mechanism and movable balance weight, and selects the corresponding reducers and brakes. The tower crane static analysis, modal analysis and transient response analysis is carried out with ANSYS, proving that the designed tower crane meets the structural characteristicsBesides, by the Equivalent Finite Element Integrate Method, this paper establishes the corresponding equivalent plane model and deduces tower crane dynamics equation. And the hoisting mechanism, luffing mechanism is analyzed and verified by ADAMS simulation, proving the designed tower crane is reasonable and reliable.Finally, after comparing the designed tower crane with the fixed balance weight of tower crane about variable amplitude force of tower crane, lateral displacement, and tower’s stability characteristics, the novel towers crane’s weight is lighter, the load is bigger, the force distribution is more reasonable and lifetime is longer, which is improving the performances of movable balance weight tower crane.
