Smart home has become more and more popular in recent years. It aims at helping people manage the home appliance freely and build an autonomous environment in home or working area. With the development of mobile terminals, smart phones have played an important role in our daily life. The combination of smart phones and smart home is a prospective idea.This paper introduces the background of the smart home concept and show optimistic perspective for smart home development. Then a wireless solution based on Internet protocol to manage the smart home units easily is introduced. Based on this approach, the author designs a smart home system with the implementation of related software and hardware. People can use smart phones or tablets to control or monitor the home appliances both locally and remotely. We come up with the concept of Smart Units and Home Proxy. Low cost Wi-Fi module is used to build Smart Units. Home proxy is responsible for the coordination of home devices in local wireless network. The combination of remote server and home proxy is a new scheme for remote control in which XMPP is used. Home proxy also serves as a port for remote management transferring wireless commands and reporting devices’ information. The remote server can act as a service provider and provide service for different homes and offices. We use experiment to test the function of the system and analysis the data collected, finally verifying the effectiveness of the system.
