In order to cope with the pressure of energy and environment, the governments put forward increasingly strict requirements for the automotive industries. Laws and standards about emission and fuel consumption are severe challenge for the automotive industry especially the engine industry and people realize that the research and development of clean energy is a pressing matter. Compared to other types of engines, the air-powered engine(APE) has unparalleled advantages in many respects. As the working medium, the compressed air is directly piped into the cylinder and expands to make the piston work,which transforms pressure energy of high-pressure air into mechanical energy. The progress is a work with pollution-free emissions and it can realize the real sense of green power cars.Based on detailed analysis of the APE working process, a mathematical model was created. In order to find out the influence factors to the performance of APE and to create a theoretical basis for optimization design, a simulation model for the APE was established by using mix programming of VB and MATLAB. Computing and analysis were also made for various performance indexes of APE. The main contents are as follows:Firstly, the working principle and process for APE were analyzed and its mathematical model was also established based on thermodynamics and mechanical theories.Secondly, set up the simulation model for the single-stage expansion APE working process by using mix programming of VB and MATLAB. According to the analysis of the characteristics of the working process in cylinder, factors that influence the performance of the engine were found. The key factors which contained were used to discover their effects on the APE performance and therefore made a targeted optimization analysis.Thirdly, simulation for dual-stage expansion is carried out which is supported by the research of single-stage expansion APE. The simulation for the key aspects of dual-stage expansion APE was calculated in the last section. The optimization indexes are obtained based on the analysis and evaluation of the simulation results.Fourthly,the optimization indexes of the APE which are based on the analysis and evaluation of the simulation results can provide theoretical and data basis for the design and transformation of the APE.
