In recent years, urban development in China takes part in the process of social transformation, the urban development is facing the challenge of "reconstruction". As the core of a city, city center is the primary one to be updated and improved. At present, many problems such as old central function, lack of popularity, environmental problems exist in city centers. City centers with those problems cannot represent the good image of cities, meet the needs of citizens and undertake the important functions. With the development of the theory of mixed-use or complex, the complex development of urban central area has been become a consensus. While during constructions of urban central area, most of the projects cannot reach a valid complex development and, therefore, cannot play roles in upgrading urban functions and promoting vibrancy.Based on the crossroads’attractive force and promoting vibrancy of the urban central area form a complex development view, a concept of "complex vibrant point" is developed and evaluating indicators are constructed to analyze the degree of complex development of different kinds of urban area. And then, the successful development experiences are concluded in order to contribute to the constructions of urban central areas.The paper is organized as following:Chapter 1, Introduction. Backgrounds of the development of urban central areas is outlined and the objectives and methods are proposed.Chapter2, Literature review. Related theories about urban central areas, complex development and attracting facilities are reviewed.Chapter3, Index construction. A concept of "complex vibrant point" on the basis of the crossroads’attractive force is developed and evaluating indicators are concluded to measure the degree of complex development.Chapter4, Three urban central areas——xinjiekou, hunanlu, fuzimiao are measured as case studies from three dimensions——scale, function and space. The successful and unsuccessful experiences are explored. The complex development model of urban central areas are further developed.Chapter 5, The complex development model is applied to laocheng urban central area in Linyi City, Shandong Province.Chapter 6:Conclusions and discussions.
