With the continuous improvement of the industrialization, the size of civil power lines is becoming larger and larger, the structure of the lines becomes more and more complex, and the difficulty of fault location is greatly increased. On the other hand, the requirements of automatic control and power supply safety of the industrial field are becoming more and more high, so the civil power lines need a set of intelligent line fault location system more and more urgently. The traveling wave fault location method has many advantages and has been widely applied to all kinds of power line fault location system, provides a reliable method for fault location. But the technology of traveling wave fault location for multi branch civil power line is not mature yet. With the development of the technology of traveling wave fault location and high speed data acquisition and processing, the application of the traveling wave fault location method in the civil power lines becomes possible and the research also becomes very meaningful.This paper combined with the requirements of civil power line fault location, by analyzing the characteristics of civil power lines to research the characteristics of fault traveling wave in civil power lines and find the law of the traveling wave transmission. Then establish the different fault models, study the transmission characteristics of different types of fault traveling wave, in the hope of providing solutions to civil power line fault location and a reference to improve the stability and intelligent of power supply system. In this context, the main research works in this paper include:(1) Analyzed the transmission characteristics of traveling wave in multi branch civil power lines, researched the effect of branch number to the traveling wave transmission. Concluded the attenuation law of traveling wave in different number branch lines by analyzing and calculating. Then utilized the ATP-EMTP software to simulate and verificate the correctness of the attenuation law expression.(2) Researched the effect of branch connection type on the transmission characteristics of the traveling wave. Concluded that the number of nodes have effect on the traveling wave transmission and the connection types have no effect on traveling wave transmission by calculation analysis and software simulation. Established the transfer function of the civil power line traveling wave signal on the basis of the above researches.(3)Analyzed the transmission characteristics of open fault and short fault and grounding fault through the theoretical calculation and simulation experiment analysis and energy spectrum analysis, established the fault models of these three kinds of faults by MATLAB / Simulink. Then utilize the transfer function to calculate the data and analyze the spectrum characteristics of the input and output wave form and came to the conclusion of transmission characteristics.(4) Set up the experiment system in the laboratory, verified the correctness of the theoretical analysis, calculation and software simulation in this paper by experiments.The research results of this paper can provide some references for the application of the traveling wave fault location in civil power lines, and have some social and academic value.
