In order to meet the demand of increasing traffic, the highway expansion projects have been gradually carried out in China. In the extension process of the highway, the old bridges or culverts need to be repaired so that the expansion projects can be started. One possible way of increasing the capacity of the old bridge or culvert is to insert a corrugated steel plate structure(CSPS) into the existing bridge or culvert and then fill the vacant space between the old and new structure with a material satisfying a complete fill of this area After the repaired project, the lining corrugated steel culvert can be lengthened as the extension of the bridge. This method allows the reinforcing of the old structure without stopping traffic on the road and without having to dismantle the existing bridge and culvert.To begin with, the problems in the process of the old bridge reform as well as the traditional reinforcement methods of the old bridge are presented. The bridge reinforcement and extension methods based on the corrugated steel plate structure are concluded. Secondly, comparing the design methods of the corrugated steel plate structure such as the AISI method, AASHTO method, CHBDC method and Inner Mongolia local standard, the recommended design method of the corrugated steel plate structure is presented. Besides, using the ANSYS structural analysis software to analyze the mechanical behavior and the deformation of the the corrugated steel plate structure considering the influence of the dead load, the live load, the thickness of the steel plate and the elastic modulus of the filling materials. In the end, an specific design example of a reinforced concrete hollow slab bridge reinforced and extended by using open cross section corrugated steel plate structure is given.
