The concept of optimum design comes from people’s social production practices. When a product design or an engineering design did not meet the desired requirements in advance, designer will follow certain “optimal” thoughts and laws to change design model and design parameters. So it can improve the performance of product or structure to the best result. For structural optimization, it means to seek the best design according to certain indicators under the constraints(design requirements). The indictors can be weight of the structure, cost, etc. The structural optimization can be divided into the traditional design methods and optimization design method based on mathematical analysis.The traditional design method selects the best design depending on design requirements. It mainly bases on experience and even intuitive judgments. This kind structural optimization also can be called experience optimization design method.The structural optimization design method based on mathematical analysis is building on mathematical optimization algorithm, structural analysis and computer technology. This method quantifies the objective function and constraint functions by mathematical model. It requires accurate theoretical foundation and optimization criteria and must be used with specialized software or programs. The structural optimization belongs to the CAE technology. It combines mechanics theory, mathematical optimization algorithms, computer technology to provides a way to achieve structural optimization for engineer. It is a easy way to select a satisfaction or optimal design from many feasible designs. Building the mathematical model of structural optimization is an important step to transform the actual engineering design problem into mathematical optimization problem. Except some very simple structure, usual structures’ constraint equations are hard to express by explicit of design variables. Because the constraint equations are implicit functions of design variables, it is necessary to explicit constraint equations. Response surface method(RSM) is commonly used. RSM is a method combines mathematical with statistical methods. It is used analyze the problem of response effected by a number of variables. Its ultimate aim is to optimize the response value.Because RSM takes the simulation as a black box, it can easily combined stochastic simulation with deterministic simulation. So it is used widely. Over the past decade, since the development and application of statistics in various fields, RSM further broaden the application areas. More and more scientists interest in RSM. Many scholars have studied the response surface method.This paper studies the entire RSM design process. Used different methods to optimize truss structure and crank structure.
