Economic globalization enlarges continuous development of the port logistics center. As an important transmission machinery on port, the demand for terminal tractor continues to rise. Conventional terminal tractor works in poor condition, which results in high fuel consumption to the tractor, low economic benefits to the port, and great air polution to the city where the port is located. Some cities with high demand for air quality have being promoting electric port tractors to reduce pollution of the port. Since then some manufactures have developed their own electric tractors. Based on analysis of operating conditions and operating characteristics of terminal tractor, a conventional tractor on road was refitted into an electric terminal tractor with the conventional powertrain replaced by electric powertrain designed in this paper.This paper refers to the information of electric tractor products at home and abroad. Powertrain topologies, performance parameters and arrangement form of these successful cases were analyzed. Port logistics books and national standards related were for reference to determine design requirements, incluing dynamic performance, driving range and trailing load. Interval mathematics was used to match the power train, uncertain parameters were expressed with intervals during the process of matching powertrain. Computing results were intervals and were used to select electric motor, transmission and battery from the products on the market. Powertrain arrangement and mass distribution were made to check the space and load of tractor.ADVISOR was used to develop model for electric terminal tractor and internal combustion engine tractor. Taking the electric tractor designed as platform, condition model of electric port tractor was built in terms of empirical working parameters summarized. Energy consumptions of electric tractor and the original internal combustion engine tractor under the port condition were compared. In order to further improve economic performance of electric tractor, optimizing problems including optimizing objective, variables and constraint conditions were analyzed. After that an optimizing model was built with genetic algorithm toolbox installed in MATLAB and functions in ADVISOR. Result of the optimization demonstrated that economic performance of electric tractor was further improved on the premise of meeting the use requirements.A feasible scheme of matching powertrain for an electiric port tractor was provided in this paper. It also acts as a significant reference for powertrain matching for other specific occasions.
