The subject of this article is about the economic thinking and policy practice of Tsiang, S. C.. As the first Chinese nominee of the Nobel Economics Prize, Tsiang(1918-1993) has great achievements in economic research, especially in the monetary theory. He also has great talent for international finance, and take-off theory of the developing countries, etc. Besides, Tsiang combined the policy practice with academic research and actively participated in the discussion of the economic policies of the Government. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part describes Tsiang’s life, related literature review and research background. The second part describes the economic thinking of Tsiang when he taught at Peking University, mainly through researching his articles in "The New Road Weekly" and "The Economic Review". Anti-hyperinflationary theory, the theories of freely competitive socialism and industrialization are the main points of this part. The third part describes Tsiang’s policy practice and theory contributions in Taiwan, which included economic liberalization, anti-inflation, take-off theory in developing countries and the establishment of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research. The last part is the conclusion and implication. The conclusion is that Tsiang held the liberal economic ideas during his lifetime, and his theory on anti-inflation and liberalization are still very enlightening to China today. This article systematically discusses Tsiang’s economic thought, scholarship and policy contributions, especially in the combination of Tsiang’s thought in Beijing and his practice in Taiwan. With good grasp of Tsiang’s coherent thought, this paper contributes to the understanding of Tsiang’s economic thought and the academic history of Chinese economics.
