China’s rapid Offshore Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) has been the result of‘go global’ strategy initiated in1992. China became a major new global capitalresource, although growth eased in2011. Underlying the ‘go global’ strategy was arange of objectives, including offshore growth opportunities to build internationalbrands, acquire technology and improve operational efficiency, quality andmanagement skills for Chinese companies. You can find many good reasons to invest in Australia including strongeconomic credentials, strategic location, business friendly regulatory environmentand excellent quality life etc. So far Australia is the top destination for ChineseOFDI.There are still many differences between China and Australia including political, institutional, economic, and social structures, as well as history etc. which affectsand restricts the return on investment. This paper analyzes the Chinese investmentin the Australia, including the current status of investments in Australia, China’soverseas investment in domestic context, current characteristics of the projects andthe current problems in Australia. Secondly, the paper focuses on the currentinvestment climate in Australia, including a series of promotional measures taken bythe Australian Government, the main regulators for foreign investment, and theinvestment climate for hotel industry and regulators for labor in Australia. At last I tryto make some measures for Chinese enterprises including the project preparation, the investment phase, the management and end stage. For preparation step, Imainly explained the importance of training international talents, working withprofessional organizations, and to be consistent with the overall strategy of Chineseenterprises. For the investment phase, the Chinese enterprises need to establish acomprehensive risk management and control system and focus on diversification toreduce risk, as well consult the local Chinese embassy or consulate for more localinformation. For the management step, the enterprises should use an open mindattitude to manage the local company and carry on well the local social responsibility, and constantly improve the level of information. Finally we mustcomply with local laws and regulations to complete the project.
