With the steady growth of the national economy, the residents’consumption structure has undergone tremendous changes. The change of residents’consumption structure can show the direction of main purchasing power in large part, it can further display the industrial and product structures at different levels or stages of social-economic development so that it can make a great difference to the social economy. However, there are a series of problems with the market, such as oversupply of consumer goods, ineffective supply market rate, and overcapacity and so on; the social market is facing stronger restriction. Therefore, the study of residents’ consumption structure can not only help us to master a new direction or focus consumer demand, but also conducive to the adjustment of industrial structure and product mix upgrade, thus promoting rapid and smooth growth of the national economy. This paper uses ELES Model to study residents’consumption structure of the "2015 China Statistical Yearbook" data which includes the data of 1993-2014s so that we can fully characterize the structure of consumption of residents by empirical analysis of longitudinal time series data and cross-sectional data. What’s more, we also consider the cross-sectional data with principal component analysis and cluster analysis to comprehend the general trends and regional differences. Finally, on the basis of empirical analysis, we propose suggestions to improve the residents’ consumption structure. The results show that the urban residents’ consumption structure has shifted from subsistence to enjoyment, even though the main direction of consumers is still for food consumption, but the consumption of transportation communication and living are getting higher and higher. In addition, there are still some difference between regions although roughly the same.
