Maize is of great significance in world food production, not only it is one of the three major food crops but also one of the main forage crops. Carrying out gene transformation on corn to get a strain with new traits has gotten the world’s high attention. Improving the quality of corn by genetic engineering is a good way to promote the innovation in agricultural science and develop high-efficiency agriculture.Carotenoids are an import class of natural pigments. Not only is it the precursor to Vitamin A and important antioxidants but also the important part of chromoplasts. It is embedded in the chloroplasts and chloroplast membranes. It is also one important component in light-harvesting complex and involved in plant photosynthesis. Otherwise, carotenoids have an important role in the protection of plants under high temperature and high light stress.Psy and LycB are two important enzymes in carotenoids metabolic pathway. They are encoded respectively by two gene codes:psy and lycb, and catalyze the synthesis of them respectively. Due to the the carotenoids metabolic pathway is very complicated, the introduction of any exogenous genes may have different degree effects on them. These effects make the products of the metabolic pathway more and more so that the physiological characteristics in plants make some changes. We made two genetically modified Tianta five inbred maize lines transfected with Lmpsy and Lmlycb. And they were treated as the experimental groups. While the normal Tianta five inbred maize was used as control group. We detected the photosynthetic rate, the carotenoid concentration, the plant character, the yield, and the biomass of each group. Then the data were analyzed statistically. The results indicated that transfected with the gene of carotenoid metabolism key enzyme, the Tianta five inbred maize would be improved in the following respects: the carotenoid concentration, the photosynthetic rate, the accumulated stock of photosynthetic products, the reduction of light pollution.
