In this thesis, we investigated the algal community in eelgrassZostera marinameadows along Shandong Peninsula. Temporal and spatial variations of thecomposition, distribution, biomass (quantity), the dominant species, diversity index, richness index and evenness index of both epiphytic and benthic algal communiteswere studied and analyzed using One-Way ANOVA, cluster analysis andmulti-dimensional scaling (MDS).The results help tounderstand the epiphytic andbenthic algal communities in seagrass beds along the coastal areas of ShandongPeninsula. We can also learnmore about ecosystem structure and function of seagrassmeadows, and provides important information aboutseagrass ecosystem and habitatrestoration. The main results are summarized as follows:1. In order to study the structural characteristics of the epiphytic algal communityof eelgrass (Zostera marina) along Shandong Peninsula, we conducted investigationsat Zhanqiao, Qingdao, Shuangdao Bay, Weihai, and Moon Lake, Rongcheng in March(spring), June(summer), September(autumn) and December(winter)2012.Seventeen species were identified, belonging to3classes and14genera. Among them, there were4genera and5species of Rhodophyceae,4genera and4species ofPhaeophyceae, and6genera and8species of Chlorophyceae. The highest number ofspecies (7) was found at Zhanqiao and Shuangdao in spring, and the lowest (1) atMoon Lake in both autumn and winter. The highest biomass was also found in spring, and the lowest in autumn (Zhanqiao), winter (Shuangdao) and summer (Moon Lake). The Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Pielou’s evenness index were lowest atZhanqiao, while the diversity index was highest at Shuangdao. For the temporalvariations, the species diversity index and evenness index were highest in summer, and lowest in winter. The epiphytic algal community structure varied significantlybetween different locations and between most of the different sampling sites at samelocations in different seasons. Results indicated that temporal and spatial variationplayed important roles in the variations of community structure.2. In order to study the structural characteristics of the benthic algal communityinside and outsideeelgrass (Zostera marina and Z. japonica) patches, we conductedinvestigations at Moon Lake, Rongcheng in December(winter)2012andMarch(spring), June(summer) and September(autumn)2013. Sixteen species wereidentified, belonging to threeclasses and13genera. Among them, there weretwogenera and two species of Rhodophyceae, fourgenera and fourspecies ofPhaeophyceae, and sevengenera and10species of Chlorophyceae. The number ofspecies all varied significantly inside and outside patches in four seasons (P=0.000,P=0.008). The highest number of species (13) was found at S3(inside patch) inspring, and the lowest (0) at outside patchs in winter. The highest biomass of benthicalgeas was found at S3(inside patch) in autumn:(2191.44±1021.16)g·m-2, and thelowest at outside patchs in autumn; Except a few sections, higher values ofShannon-Wiener diversity index, Margalef richness index and Pielou’s evenness indexwere observed insite patches than the corresponding outside patchs. The structure ofthe benthic algal community varied significantly among inside and outside patchs indifferent seasons. Results indicated that seasonal environmental variationand seagrassheterogeneityplayed important roles in the variations of community structure.3. In order to study the structural characteristics of the epiphytic diatomcommunity of eelgrass (Zostera marina) along Shandong Peninsula, we conductedinvestigations at Zhanqiao, Qingdao, Shuangdao Bay, Weihai, and Moon Lake,Rongcheng in March(spring), June(summer), September(autumn) andDecember(winter)2012. Seven genera were identified, including Cocconeis sp.,Navicula sp., Licmophora sp., and Nitzschiella sp. No significant temporal and spatialvariations (P=0.086, P=0.302) were observed in the unmber of genera in the threelocations. The highest number of genera (6) was found at Shuangdao in summer and autumn, and the lowest (0) at Zhanqiao in winter. The number of epiphytic diatomsmostly variedsignificantly on different types of blades: old blades> matureblades>immature blades. The number of diatoms on different types of blades all varied, butnot significantly in temporal and spatial variation. Themaximum number of diatoms(82530.87±36166.46)was found on the old blades at Moon Lake in spring, and theminimum was observed outside patchs in autumn;Cocconeis sp. and Navicula sp.weredominant species at the three locationsin four seasons (except Zhanqiao inwinter). Shannon-Wiener diversity index was observed as: old blades> matureblades>immature blades. Margalef richness index and Pielou’s evenness indexshowedcomplex changes. Results indicated that leaf age played an important role inthe variations of structural characteristics of diatom communities.
