This paper studied the differences between the ultrafine powder and ordinarypowder of Senecio scandens in the powder properties, chemical composition analysis andthe dissolution rate of total components; The reason of mixed infectious diarrhea in thepiglets were investigated; And the feeds supplemented with the ultrafine powder andordinary powder of S. scandens were evaluated in the preventive and curative effects todiarrhea and in the influence of growth performance of the piglets. The main results wereas follows:(1) The ultrafine particle size analysis showed that the ordinary powder particle sizedistribution center D50was10.19μm, in which90.43%of the powder fell into1.91~30.2μm and met the specification of ultrafine particle; the ordinary powder particle sizedistribution center D50was99.69μm, in which70.13%of the powder fell into39.81~724.44μm. The bulk density and angle of repose of the two kinds of powder werestudied and found that the bulk density and angle of repose of the ultrafine powder andordinary powder of S. scandens were0.2464±0.0020g/cm3,48.8±0.50°, and0.2844±0.0033g/cm3,53.1±1.50°, which indicated that the ultrafine S. scandens powder naturewas greatly changed.(2) The chemical preliminary test and dissolution test showed that two kinds of thepowder consisted of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, acids, etc., but no anthraquinone andpolysaccharides. The total amount of extract of the components from the ultrafine particlewas higher than that from the ordinary powder in different extraction conditions. It wasindicted that after the ultrafine treatment the S. scandens phytochemicals were notchanged, but the dissolution rate was greatly enhanced.(3) It was found that the main cause of diarrhea was mixed infections caused bybacteria such as Escherichia, Salmonella, Shigella, etc. The pathogenicity test showedthat Escherichia and Salmonella were the strongest pathogenic bacteria.(4) The growth performance tests on the ultrafine S. scandens powder showed thatthe feeds added with certain quantities of ultrafine S. scandens decreased the feed-gainratio and increased average daily weight gains. The most obvious effect of dosage of theultrafine S. scandens was0.9%. And it was found that the levels of AKP、GH、IGF-I raised significantly. There was no effect on the content of serum GOT and GPT.(5) The ultrafine S. scandens powder on diarrhea prevention trials showed that thefeeds added with certain quantities of ultrafine S. scandens decreased the diarrheafrequency and diarrhea index of the piglets and the optimum dosage of the ultrafine S.scandens powder was1.2%. It was found that the levels of serum IgG, IgA, IgM wereraised significantly, respectively and the control effect of the ultrafine S. scandenspowder against diarrhea was better than that of the ordinary powder of S. scandens.(6) The possible mechanism of the ultrafine S. scandens powder on mixed infectiousdiarrhea prevention could be that the levels of immunoglobulins such as IgG, IgA andIgM were increased and the piglets’ hunoral immunity was improved. The piglets’ growthperformance improved by the ultrafine S. scandens could be related to the enhancementof the body’s metabolic efficiency and the vitality of growth hormone.
