Rice is one of the world’s three major food crops. China ranks second in the world in terms of planting area, and first in the world in terms of yield. Rice planting area accounts for about30%of the national food crops planting area, and the rice yield accounts for50%of total food crops production, so rice is China’s first major crop. The brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the main pests in rice production. According to the analysis, the BPH severe outbreak may be due to climate factors, and may be due to pesticides abuse killing BPH predators and thereafter stimulating BPH breeding. Therefore, the development of the rice sterile lines carrying BPH resistance genes is an effective way to solve the BPH harm, and has important significance in increasing the science and technology competiveness of Chinese hybrid rice.In this experiment, the elite intermediate maintainer materials with BPH resistance gene Bphl8were used as male parent (recurrent parent), and the sterile line Bo Ⅲ A was used as female parent (non recurrent parent). By using conventional breeding and the molecular marker assisted selection, and by using the pest resistance identification and pollen microscopic examinations, we screened the offsprings, and obtained the following results.1. The donor parent of the BPH resistance gene Bphl8had minor effect restoring genes. If the offsprings derived from the backcross in which the above mentioned donor was used as a nonrecurrent, were hybridized with the sterile lines with the wild abortive cytoplasm, the hybrids would have stained pollen.2. Four male sterile lines containing Bphl8gene were obtained in this experiment. These male sterile lines were better than Bo III B in terms of BPH resistance after several generations of BPH resistance bioassay, were high in terms of the pollen sterility rate after the pollen microscopic examination, and had no bagged selfed seeds. The corresponding maintainer lines were soft rice type, suitable for the needs of the market.
