For the construction of water-saving gardens, drought tolerant Clematis fruticosa was selected as the test material in this paper. Four kinds of relative soil water content (SWC)13%-180%、23%-31%、34%-40%、47%-54%was designed in Pot experiment. Several physiological indexes which are widely used were tested to understanding how to adapt to different moisture gradient.Pot experiments results show that:(1) Malondialdehyde (MDA) content, peroxidase (POD) activity and proline (Pro) were significantly increased with the SWC decreased. Net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate decreased significantly. Content of Chla, Chlb, carotenoid did not change significantly. Dry weight decreased at the SWC13%-18%,23%-31%. Root-shoot ratio is greater than1at all4range of SWC.(2)Correlation analysis show that, MDA, POD, Pro are significant negative correlate with the SWC.(3) MDA, POD, Pro, net photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate are important indicators of the physiological state of C. fruticosa under drought stress.Plot experiments results showed that:with the SWC changes, the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, content of MDA, Pro change. It is roughly same with the pot experiment. Net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, MDA content showed a significant correlation with the SWC.
