The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between relief degree ofland surface and soil erosion in Chongqing, further with the current condition anddynamic changes of soil erosion. We derive various fators relevant to the relief degreeof land surface, which include surface roughness, relative elevation difference, gullydensity, density of peaks,valley density, to observe and quantify the effects betweenthese factors and average erosion modulus and average soil erosion amount in2012. Inaddition, we generate the classification and distribution of relief degree of land surfaceand soil erosion, as well as the types and the spatial distributions of soil erosion inChongqing area.The main findings of this study are as follows:①In the assessment of soil erosion at1:250000scale, surface roughness is themain fator influence the relief degree of land surface, and the function fitting in thisstudy are y163966x2376689x212137.②Regions with smaller relief degree of land surface have lower intensity of soilerosion. Generally speaking, the intensity of soil erosion increases as the relief degree ofland surface is increasing. They have strong correlation in space. However, there arestill exceptions for four countys. the Hechuan district and the Dadukou district. Theyhave relatively flat relief, but the soil erosion there is surprisingly intense. On thecontrary, Wushan county and Wuxi county have strong relief degree of land surface, buttheir soil erosion is negligible. From the above four more special districts, we can seethat the relief degree of land surface (that topography factor) is not the only factor of theimpact strength of soil erosion, but also by other effects,such as the rainfall, runoff,vegetation cover and human factors etc, these factors will lead to the area of soil erosionaggravate or slow down.③With the divisions of water and soil conservation, refer to the result ofclassification and distribution in this study, considering the affection of geologicalcondition and water loss, we divide Chongqing area into four subcategories. Bycustomizing the naming rules with the formate of “geomorphic type+soil erosion intensity”, the four subcategories can be named as: southern sichuan basin middle hillsmild loss type area, sichuan–chongqing low hills Mild loss type area, hubei-sichuanmiddle hills medium loss type area and daba mountain middle hills medium loss typearea.
